There are many recreational and cultural opportunities to experience. Two major attractions for both visitors and natives of Alberta are the beautiful Rocky Mountains and the Alberta Badlands. They offer opportunities for exciting field trips, visits etc.

GHSD is located in close proximity to Calgary, a major Canadian City known for its thriving oil and gas industry, national sports teams, and for hosting the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. International Students will experience the best of both worlds with these small, quiet communities and will at the same time have convenient access to the amenities of this large, metropolitan city.

Strathmore is a town located along the Trans-Canada Highway in southern Alberta, Canada, 40 kilometers (25 mi) east of the city of Calgary, within the boundaries of Wheatland County. Population I 2006: 10,336

Drumheller is a town on the Red Deer River in the Badlands of east-central Alberta, Canada. It is located 110 kilometers (68 mi) northeast of Calgary. Population in 2006: 7,932

Examples of recreational activities available in the communities are Swimming, Downhill Skiing, Ice Skating, Hockey, Bowling, Tennis, Curling, Golf, Boating, and Hiking.

The communities and surrounding areas also offer cultural activities like, Rosebud Theatre of the Arts, Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, Heritage Park, Calgary Stampede, Visiting a Cattle Ranch or Grain Farm, Outdoor Campfire and Weiner Roast, Horseshoe Canyon, and more!

Zusätzlich zu den Hauptfächern des ‘Alberta Learning Academic Program’ mit den Kursen in ‘English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Career and Life Management’ werden Fächer aus den folgenden Bereichen angeboten:  Z.B. ‘Languages (French, German, Spanish by Distance Ed), French Immersion, Fine Arts Courses, Band, Choir, Drama and Career & Technology’.

Des Weiteren gibt es große Anzahl von sogenannten ‘Electives’, Wahlfächern: z.B. ‚Wood Shop, Metalworking, Photography, Marketing, Design Studies, Digital Design, Web-Building; Cooking, Hairstyling, Carpentry, Automotives, Welding, Computers, Tourism, Sewing’.

Auch haben Schüler die Möglichkeit Mitglied in einem Team zu werden: ‘Basketball, Volleyball, Golf, Track, Football, Cross Country Running, Swimming, Curling, Badminton’ oder an einem der zahlreichen ‘extra-curricular activities‘ teilzunehmen.

Schüler, die nicht genügend Englischkenntnisse haben, nehmen am ESL-Programm (English Second Language) teil. In regelmäßigen Abständen werden die Schüler überprüft, damit sie ihr bestmögliches Ergebnis erzielen können.

GHSD’s International Services Home Stay Program is committed to providing caring, nurturing placements for international students. It strives to provide the International Students with loving environment that promotes academic, social, emotional and physical well-being. Home Stay families welcome the opportunity to share Canadian culture and activities. They are selected carefully on the basis of special criteria.

As an alternative to arranging home stay why not living in one of the dormitories: Drumheller Valley Sec. School + Strathmore High School? GHSD is the only public school system with 2 Boarding Facilities for international students.  Both residencies provide students with a comfortable, safe environment that allows them to focus on their studies, as well as interact socially with their peers.

Either choice – home stay or residency – provides a safe and caring environment with organized activity schedule.

Both residencies are supervised by a qualified, caring individual, who is responsible for:

• Supervising the menus so that it follows dietary needs of the students
• Assuring attendance of students at school and reporting absenteeism
• Making arrangements for the students to see physicians or visit the local hospital, if required
