New Westminster – A Great Place to Live & Study

New Westminster is a wonderful Canadian community. British Columbia’s oldest city, New Westminster is full of friendly people, beautiful parks, charming shops, interesting historical buildings, and a strong community spirit. This is a small, safe, and pleasant place to live and study. The city is part of Greater Vancouver, and downtown Vancouver is only 25 minutes away by the Sky Train.

Greater Vancouver, Western Canada’s largest city, is an exciting and beautiful cosmopolitan place set between the mountains and the ocean. Many international organizations say that Greater Vancouver is one of the top 10 places in the world to live and visit. Our weather is very pleasant: warm sunny summers (20″ -26°C) and mild winters (3° -10°C). Sports such as hiking, sailing, and skiing are very popular, as is the great shopping, many cultural events, and thousands of restaurants with foods from all over the world!

Homestay

Homestay is an important part of a study-abroad experience for an international student. The Homestay Coordinator will arrange a friendly Canadian family for the student to live with. He carefully selects families that provide a safe, comfortable and happy home environment, plus 3 meals every day and a furnished bedroom. All homestay families must pass the screening process, which includes personal interviews, a home inspection, and reference checks.

Orientation – 2 weeks

It is mandatory prior to school start that the new international students attend orientation, which is two weeks in duration. Living and studying in a foreign country can be a very challenging experience. Orientation provides answers to the many questions that arise when one is suddenly transported to a new culture. During orientation, new students meet with teachers, administrators and fellow students with whom they will develop very close working relationships. It also provides the first opportunity to develop friendships that can last a lifetime. In addition to a tour of New Westminster and Vancouver, orientation may include a visit to a beautiful Canadian wilderness setting.

Educational field trips and outdoor programs are highly successful elements of the International Education program, and New Westminster School District is pleased to offer these uniquely Canadian educational opportunities to the international students
