The Community of North Vancouver

The unique city of North Vancouver (population about 84,000) is located on the south west coast of British Columbia close to the city of Vancouver. Its natural beauty offers breath taking scenery: a combination of snow-capped mountains, clean oceans, magnificent parks, lush forests and mild climate all contribute in making North Vancouver an ideal location to live.

North Vancouver residents are fortunate to have opportunities for year round recreational activities that include groomed trails for hiking and mountain biking, majestic mountains for snowboarding and skiing. Other conveniences include golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, skate parks, soccer fields and ball parks.

About North Vancouver Schools

The North Vancouver School District provides a challenging and positive environment for over 18,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 with a limited number of international students at each school and approximately 600 international students in total. Highly motivated international students who have demonstrated strong academic achievements in their home countries are offered a successfully proven learning experience. All schools offer a high standard of academic excellence, with a proven track record for maximizing student potential.

Besides the consistent record of excellence in academic subjects the schools promote excellence in the areas of fine arts, athletics, business and technology. The schools offer a variety of special programs that include:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
  • Digital Medical Academy
  • Hockey Skills Academy and
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Program.

North Vancouver schools advocate the use of information and communication technology throughout the curriculum and strive to enrich and expand the learning experience through its use.

Students from around the world are immersed in fully integrated programs with Canadian students. This approach promotes a greater understanding and acceptance of all cultures.

International student are expected to attend all classes, participate in all aspects of school life and strife toward their maximum potential.

Each secondary school has an international counsellor available to assist the international students with course selection and programming as well as offering support and guidance throughout the year(s) of study.

Support for International Students

  • New international students are welcomed to the school district at a special orientation.
  • Students are provided with clear North Vancouver School District guidelines and expectations.
  • Upon acceptance and arrival in North Vancouver, new international student participate in an assessment to determine current levels of English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  • Students are placed in an age appropriate grades and where necessary, English as a Second Language (ESL) support will be offered.
  • International students are supported by a dedicated group of professionals that include teachers, counsellors, school administrators, International Program Administrator and International District Staff.

Homestay Program

Secondary age international students are encouraged to reside in approved Homestay with local families. An important and valued part of this experience is the participation of local families who willingly share their homes and lives with our international students. Students are accommodated near their schools with carefully chosen families. Through daily interaction and participation with families, international students have the opportunity to practice English in a safe, comfortable environment, to learn about Canadian culture and to develop lifelong friendships.

Homestay families will provide quality meals and private bedrooms; in exchange, students are expected to participate actively with their host families, follow Homestay guidelines and assist with family chores.

The Homestay services are contracted to local companies who place international students in carefully screened private North Vancouver homes and provide specialized services to support the needs of international students including custodial guardianship and airport transportation.
