QUALICUM SCHOOL DISTRICT
Welcome to the International Programs of Qualicum School District. International students from all over the world are provided the opportunity to live with a local family, study in a Canadian school, and enjoy the wonderful quality of life one enjoys on Vancouver Island. Qualicum offers an experience that will be safe, caring, challenging and fun.
About the Program

Living Arrangements
Students live in community Home Stays arranged by the school district.
Home Stay families:
- Provide safe comfortable surroundings
- Essentials such as meals, and transportation.
- Involve the students in their social life.
- Program coordinators keep in close contact to ensure that everybody is comfortable with the homestay arrangement.
Location
The coast of Vancouver Island where the Qualicum School District is located has a pleasant maritime climate with an average summer temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and an average temperature of 5 degrees Celsius during December to February. The annual precipitation of 95 centimeters falls as mostly rain between October and May, and there can be an occasional snowfall in winter. Some years there is snow on the nearby mountains but none at sea level.
Qualicum and Parksville are easily accessible by car. Both communities are located approximately 35 minutes from Nanaimo, two and a half hours from Victoria, and two and a half hours from Vancouver by car and ferry. There are airports in Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo and Victoria. International students are required to fly into Vancouver International Airport and then connect to Nanaimo airport where they will be met and transported to their homestay location. Students are asked to contact the school district before finalizing travel arrangements so that groups of students can be picked up together.
A bus service is available within the school district and bus service is available to Nanaimo, Victoria and Vancouver via ferry.
Oualicum SD is about 1 ½ hour’s drive from Mont Washington, the biggest and busiest skiing and snowboarding facility on Vancouver Island. The hill is known for its excellent snow conditions.
