Program Information

Classes range in size from an average maximum of 30 students for regular classes to a maximum of 22 for ESL classes. In addition to the wide range of courses in the
- academic, technical, information technology, the arts, and business fields,

Each school offers a number of innovative courses and programs at both the Intermediate and Graduation levels including opportunities for enrichment. All schools offer
- specialized courses in Modern Languages, Physical Education, Technology, as well as Visual and Performing Arts. Unique courses and programs offered include: Broadcasting and Recording Arts Technology, Engineering, all levels of Computer Assisted Design courses, Environmental Biology, Computer Animation, Desktop Publishing, and Music Composition courses.

Chef Training, and various Apprenticeship Programs

Special Academies are offered for

Richmond Secondary HighSchools

All 10 Richmond Secondary Schools have been newly built, or recently renovated with upgraded amenities such as gymnasia, automated resource centres, PC & MAC computer labs, Wi-Fi connections, science labs, theatres and performance areas. Richmond students enjoy the highest computer access in British Columbia.

Richmond Secondary Schools accept international students in September and February for grades 8 – 12 (ages 13 – 19). Richmond schools offer a full complement of academic and non-academic classes as well as various athletic activities, visual and performing arts, personal development opportunities, and special events.

Activities

A variety of cultural and sporting activities are available to international students at school and in the community, including: festivals, sporting events, music, museums, art galleries, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, soccer, rugby, tennis, ultimate Frisbee, football, hockey, swimming, curling, lacrosse, and golf. In addition, the school district sponsors a variety of activities for international students at no cost, such as skiing, bowling, ice skating, and day trips to the USA.

Support for Students

The Richmond School District employs a Homestay Coordinator to organize and facilitate an efficient Homestay program to provide support for host families and students requiring homestay. Living with a family is an excellent and enjoyable way to experience Canadian culture, and to reinforce English language usage.

All schools taking part in the International Student Program have advisors, administrators, and counsellors who are available to counsel students in both academic and non-academic matters.

International Students can take part in a wide number of extracurricular school activities; including sports, band, choir, theatre, and social justice clubs where international students can interact with other students sharing common interests. Within the Richmond community there are also many multicultural activities as well as information services to assist non-English speakers.

Homestay – Authentic West Coast Living

International student have the option of staying with a warm, welcoming Canadian family while studying in Richmond schools. All homestays families are within a short distance of school. Families are carefully selected and prepared to ensure the best possible match for both the international students and homestay families. Richmond, Co-Host of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and home to the Vancouver International Airport is a booming cosmopolitan city of over 185,000 residents. This island city which is surrounded by nature at the mouth of the Frazer River, is a safe, clean, community which welcomes international students into its vibrant multi-cultural population.

A temperate West Coast climate means that Richmond residents enjoy comfortable temperatures all year round. Unlike anywhere else in Canada, flowers bloom in February and last well into autumn.
