Program
Information
The International Student Program
of Richmond – School – District, BC, takes students
from Grades 8 through 11 at selected secondary schools in Richmond.
Richmond Secondary schools offer a
wide range of courses in academic, technical and business fields.
There is a counselor available at each school to assist International
Students in course planning. Classes range in size from a maximum
of 32 students for regular classes and a maximum of 20 for ESL
classes. Typical subjects include English, Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Computer Programs and
Physical Education. Students may enter the program at the beginning
of the fall or spring term. In addition to the wide range of courses
in the academic, technical, information technology, the arts,
and business fields, all schools offer a number of specialized
courses in Modern Languages, Physical Education, Technology, the
Visual and Performing Arts. Richmond’s schools also offer
a number of unique and innovative courses and programs. Please
feel free to ask for more detailed information on these courses.
Richmond secondary schools offer a
multitude of extra-curricular activities in music, drama, sports,
and other areas of personal development. Qualified students may
take ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES (AP) or may register for courses
in the International BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM (IB).

for Students
Accredited Home Stay is available.
All schools taking part in the ISP have advisors, administrators,
and counsellors who are available to counsel students in both
academic and non-academic matters. Students can take part in a
wide number of extracurricular school activities; sports, band,
choir, and clubs where international students can interact with
other students sharing common interests. Within the Richmond community
there are also many multi-cultural activities as well as information
services to assist non-English speakers.
LIVING
IN RICHMOND - Community and Location
Richmond is a booming cosmopolitan
city of over 156,000 residents. This island city which is surrounded
by nature at the mouth of the Frazer River, is a safe, clean,
community which welcomes international students into its vibrant
multi-cultural population.
Richmond is a special place to live
and study. It is situated within minutes of Vancouver International
Airport and of downtown Vancouver using an efficient public transit
system. Students can easily access a wide variety of cultural
events, fine arts opportunities, and professional sports activities.
The proximity of the mountains and the ocean, offers a lot of
recreational activities. Many of Richmond’s different ethnic
and cultural organizations host celebrations and cultural events
throughout the year. In addition, cultural centres, community centres, and places of worship offer a warm welcome to foreign students.
Student
Composition
International students from the following
countries have already visited the Richmond School District: Peru,
Paraguay, Mexico, Thailand, China, Slovakia, Taiwan, Israel, Africa,
Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Brazil, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, Macau, the Philippines and Singapore. Program
enrolment at each school is limited to enable student’s
maximum opportunity to utilize their English skills. The public
school system in Richmond includes approximately 11,000 secondary
students of which International students make up less than 1%
of the student population.
