About Newfoundland – Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador is the gateway between Europe and North America. You will find Newfoundland and Labrador on the north-east corner of North America. ‘Neufundland’ – Newfoundland, the island portion of the province, is the 15th largest island in the world. The Province is Canada’s most easterly, with a population of 510.000 people. The region of the school district on Newfoundland has four distinct seasons. The winters are cold and snowy, and the summers are warm.

The warmest of welcomes awaits the International Student in his new home away from home. The people of Newfoundland are world-renowned for their warmth, humour and hospitality. The entire region is known for the richness of its cultural life, and its energy in all four seasons.

Outdoors

Students will live in or near the city of Corner Brook, in the western region of Newfoundland. This region has some of the most diverse landscape in the world, and offers the perfect setting for outdoor adventure activities! Try any kind of outdoor activities like sea-kayaking, golfing, fishing, whale and bird watching, or snowboarding and skiing in a famous Ski Mountain area.

In addition ‘New Found Global Education’ offers students an Activity Program that includes eight distinctly Canadian pursuits. World-class providers of outdoor adventure experiences prepare students with appropriate instruction and provide safety equipment for each activity. Try rock climbing, dog sledding, ocean fishing, and power kiting….

Join in celebrating many community festivals, fairs and soirees! Hike in world-famous Gros Morne National Park, ski Marble Mountain, explore the beautiful Humber Valley! These activities will create unforgettable memories, while providing the opportunities to experience Canadian culture, to socialize, and to improve English language skills

Western School District has partnered with ‘New found Global Education’ to deliver an exceptional course of study. Emphasis is placed on integrating school and community life, and providing opportunities for students to link with the larger global community.

High School Fakten

  • Die Distriktschulen bieten den internationalen Schülern alle notwendigen Einrichtungen. Mit ihrer fürsorglichen und persönlichen Atmosphäre tragen sie zu einer schnellen Eingewöhnung und Integration in diese freundlichen und sicheren kanadischen Kleinstädte und in die kanadische Kultur bei.
  • Das Schuljahr dauert von Anfang September bis Ende Juni.
  • Jeder Schüler wählt 7 bis 9 Kurse.
  • Der offizielle Unterrichtstag dauert von 8.30 bis 15.00 Uhr.
  • Schulbusse bringen die Schüler mit weiter entferntem Wohnsitz zur Schule und zurück.
  • Schüler haben freien Zugang zu Internet, Büchereien und zu den meisten Außen- und Innensporteinrichtungen
  • Jede Schule hat ein eigenes zusätzliches ‚extracurricular‘ Lernangebot. Schüler können Aktivitäten u.a. aus folgenden von Lehrern betreuten Bereichen wählen: ‚individual and team sports (Softball, Soccer, Basketball, Track and Field, Cross Country Running, Mountain Biking, Cross Country Skiing, Wrestling, Snowshoeing, Ice-Hockey, Broom Ball, Curling, Archery), drama, choral and band performance, chess, public speaking, community service, science fairs, robotics, outdoor education, language clubs, and school newspapers’.
  • Internationale Schüler werden für die Klassen 7 – 12 akzeptiert.
  • Der Schuldistrikt bietet den internationalen Schülern die Möglichkeit, an einem speziellen monatlichen ‚Activitiy Program’ teilzunehmen, das von einem Anbieter für ‚Outdoor Adventure Activities’ gestaltet wird.

Gastfamilien-Programm

Gastfamilien bieten dem internationalen Schüler eine sichere und freundliche Umgebung während ihres Aufenthaltes in Neufundland. Sie heißen ihn in ihrem Heim willkommen, laden ihn zu ihren Familienaktivitäten ein und helfen ihm, sich an die neue Umgebung in Neufundland anzupassen.

Mit einer kanadischen Familie zu leben gibt den Jugendlichen die Möglichkeit, sich am ‚Canadian Lifestyle‘ zu erfreuen. Indem die Jugendlichen an Familienfeiern und –aktivitäten teilnehmen, verbessern sie nicht nur ihre englischen Sprachkenntnisse sondern erweitern dadurch gleichzeitig ihre kulturelle Erfahrung.

Gastfamilien werden sorgfältig ausgesucht, um eine Umgebung mit Wohnlichkeit, Sicherheit und durchgehender Unterstützung zu gewährleisten. Das Leben in einer Gastfamilie bietet lohnende Erfahrungen, lang andauernde Freundschaften und Erinnerungen, die der Jugendliche ein Leben lang schätzen wird.
